Aquí estamos de nuevo...
Esta vez, como ya dije, se trata de fotografías de fuegos artificiales. Estos forman parte del "XIII Festival de Pirotécnia Ciutat de Castelló". No es el mejor de todos, pero es el castillo de fuegos artificiales del que pude tomar fotos...

This time, as i said, it's fireworks photographies. They are part of the "XIII Festival de Pirotécnia Ciutat de Castelló" (XIII Fireworks Contest City of Castellón). This isn't the best one, but is the fireworks I was able to photograph...

Parece ser que no consigo acelerar la actualización del blog pese ha que hayan acabado las fiestas, de hecho incluso he ido más lento. Que se le va a hacer. El lado positivo es que he subido muchas imágenes, por lo que solo me queda escribir los textos para publicarlas... Pero vamos a lo que vamos. Este post contiene imágenes de fiesta matutina, de el Concurso de Tabalet y Dolçaina y algunas imágenes más de fiesta nocturna.

It seems I'm unable to speed up the actualization of the blog even though the holidays are way over. I have even been slower. I'm sorry, but it can be helped. The positive side is that i have already uploaded a lot of images, so what's left is to write the text and publish them... But lest go to the photos. This post contains images of morning partying, of the "Tabalet i Dolçaina" Contest (later more on that) and again images of partying, but this time at night.
So let's go with the photos.

Mesón Asturiano / Asturian Inn

Estas fotografías han sido tomada en el Mesón Asturiano. Durante las fiestas se instalan toda una serie de mesones en la ciudad, cómo el Mesón del Vino, el de la Cerveza, o en el que nos encontramos, el Mesón Asturiano. Este nos muestra tradiciones culinarias de Asturias, todas ellas deliciosas.
This photographs have been taken on the Asturian Inn. During the holidays a series of inns are installed around the city, such as the Vine Inn, the Beer Inn and the one we are, the Asturian Inn. This shows us the Asturian culinary traditions, all of them delicious.

Concurso de Tabalet i Dolçaina / "Tabalet i Dolçaina" Contest
La dolçaina es un instrumento de lengüeta doble de la familia del oboe (es el equivalente de la bombarda bretona). No se sabe con exactitud su origen, aunque algunos lo sitúan en el Antiguo Egipto. Existen muchas variantes por todo el mundo. En la Comunidad Valenciana es posiblemente donde su uso sea más popular y se conoce como dolçaina o chirimita y se acompaña de un tambor denominado tabalet.
The dulzaina is a double reed instrument in the oboe family (equivalent to the Breton Bombarde). It's origin is unknown, although some locate it on Ancient Egipt. Many varieties of the dulzaina exist in the world. In the Valencian Community it's known as a "dolçaina" or "xeremia" and is accompanied by a drum called the "tabalet".

Nit Magica de Xarxa Teatre / Magical Night of Xarxa Teatre

¡Por fin, llega el Correfocs!
Para mi es lo mejor de toda la Magdalena, aunque por supuesto es una cuestión de gustos...

Los Correfocs aúnan la tradición valenciana por el fuego con el amor a la fiesta. Todo esto mezclado con personajes que, dependiendo del Correfoc (ya que hay muchos tipos), pueden formar parte de la mitología o la historia.
La Nit Mágica de Xarxa Teatre es un espectáculo increíble, en el que personajes vestidos de "dimonis" y monjes lanzan fuegos artificiales a la gente mientras ritmos frenéticos les llevan por toda la ciudad. A lo largo del recorrido se instalan varias estructuras de fuegos artificiales, que se van activando a medida que avanza el Correfocs. Y al final del mismo hay un escenario donde músicos y dimonis suben a bailar y tocar música mientras se despliega un espectáculo de fuegos artificiales.
Todo el espectáculo se realiza rodeado de gente (a la que los dimonis lanzan petardos y fuego). Cómo veréis en las fotos la gente va bastante protegida.
La unión de tanta gente, el fuego, la pólvora y la música tienen un efecto catártico, casi numénico, que hace de la Nit Mágica un espectáculo que si puedes no debes perder...
¡Ah! Por cierto, vereis que hay fotos más pequeñas de lo habitual. Esto es por que se me acababa la tarjeta de memoria de la cámara y tuve que reducir el tamaño de las fotos para poder hacer todo el Correfocs. De hecho las últimas 7 fotos las hice con el móvil.

To me it's the best event of all the Magdalena, although it is a matter of taste...
The Correfocs join the valencian love for fire and the love for partying. All mixed up with characters that, depending on the Correfocs (as there are many kinds), ca be part of mythology or history.
The Magical Night of Xarxa Teatre in an incredible spectacle, where characters dressed as "dimonis" (devils) and monks throw fireworks at the people while frenetic rhythms carry them around the city. Throughout the path of the Correfocs several fireworks structures are installed, and they activate as the Correfocs goes on. At the very end there is a stage where dimonis and musics go up to dance and play music while a fireworks show goes on behind them.
All the Correfocs is made surrounded by people (to them the dimonis throw fireworks). As you can see in the photos the people is well protected.
Putting a lot of people together with fire, gunpowder and music has a cathartic effect, almost numenic, that makes the Magical Night a show that you must see if you can...
¡Ah! By the way, some photos are smaller than what's usual. That is so because i was running out of space in the memory card, so i was forced to reduce the size of the photos to be able to photograph the Correfocs. As a matter of fact I made the last 7 photos with my mobile phone.

Carromatos de las Collas / Colla's Caravans

¡Salud!

Ayer fue el último día de las Fiestas de la Magdalena, lo que entre otras cosas quiere decir que a partir de ahora la actualización de las imágenes va a ser más rápida, ya que no estaré por ahí tomando fotografías o de fiesta... Las últimas que he hecho son las del "Magdalena Vitol", la celebración que clausura las fiestas.
Pero continuemos con lo que estábamos. Las collas, de las que ya he hablado, son oficiales (esto es que pagan impuestos, participan en desfiles, etc.) o no oficiales (básicamente grupos de amigos que alquilan un local y compran bebida juntos, la colla a la que pertenecen la mayoría de las fotos no es oficial). La mayoría de las collas oficiales modifican carromatos, furgonetas u otros vehículos para hacer la romería y desplazarse con ellos por la ciudad.
Durante el concurso de Paellas Intercollas (ver post anterior) los miembros de las collas llevan su "carromatos" (por llamarlos de alguna manera, hay tanta variedad que no se me ocurre otro nombre) al concurso, por lo que aproveché este para fotografiarlos.
Como veréis algunos son auténticas obras de arte...

Yesterday was the last day of the Magdalena Holidays. That, among other things means from now on i will be able to update the images quickly, because won't be out there taking photos or partying around... The last photos I've taken are from the "Magdalena Vitol" (Magdalena Acclamation), the celebration that ends the holidays.
But just continue where we left it. The "collas" can be official or unofficial (that is, they pay taxes, go on the parades etc, or not). Unofficial "collas" are basically groups of friends that rent a place and buy drink together. The "colla" where most of the photos are taken is unofficial.
Nearly all the official "collas" modify vans or other vehicles to made the Pilgrimage to the Magdalena and to move around the city. During the Intercollas Paella Contest (see the last post) the members of the official "collas" bring their "caravans" (to call them something, but there is a lot of variety) to the contest, so I used the opportunity to photograph them.
As you will see some are really artistic...

Concurso de Paellas / Paella Contest

¡Otra tanda de fotos!

Esta vez, como ya dije en el post anterior, se trata de fotografías pertenecientes al Concurso de Paellas Intercollas (esto es, en el que se participa por collas).
La paella es, probablemente, el plato típico por excelencia de Castellón. Aunque hay muchos otros platos de la zona que son tan o igual de buenos... No voy a entrar en explicaciones sobre el origen de la Paella y su procedencia histórica porque las desconozco. Si alguien tiene esta información y quiere verla añadida aquí que me la envíe.
Por otro lado no voy a incluir recetas de paellas ni nada del estilo, ya que para eso hay cientos de páginas web dedicadas a recetas de cocina. Aparte existen muchos tipos de paellas y formas de hacerla, por lo que la labor no solo se encuentra fuera del ámbito de este blog, sino que además es inmensa.
Se podría decir que en Castellón cada familia tiene una receta (o varias) para la paella, y además cada uno tiene una serie de trucos que va refinando y ampliando con el tiempo, por lo que en las fotografías veremos muchas paellas distintas, con diferentes ingredientes...

Another series of photos!
This time, as i said in the last post, the photos are about the "Intercollas" Paella Contest (that is, you participate with your friends of your colla).
The paella is, probably, the most traditional course of Castellón. Although there are many other as good at least... I'm not going to explain the origins and history of the paella because i don't know it. If anyone has that information and wants to see it here please send it to me.
I'm not going to post here recipes nor anything like it. There are hundreds of webpages ful of recipes. There are also a lot of kinds of paella, and different ways to cook it, and the labor of compiling the recipes it's outside the ambit of this blog.
You could say that in Castellón every family has a recipe (or several) for the paella, and also everyone has several tricks that refine and improve with time, so in the photographies we can see very different paellas, with different ingredients...

L'Encesa de les Gaiates / Ligtning of the Gaiatas

¡Hola de nuevo!
En este post de hoy vamos a tratar las gaiatas. En el anterior hablé de los "gaiatos" o bastones unidos por cuerdas que utilizaron los colonos Cristianos de Castellón. Las Gaiatas tienen una íntima relación con estos, pero vamos poco a poco.

Un dicho popular dice que la Gaiata debe ser "un esclat de llum sense foc ni fum" (un estallido de luz sin humo ni fuego). La gaiata es uno de los símbolos que representa la tradición. Esta cuenta que el día que la gente de Castellón decidió bajar al llano era un día de lluvia y mal tiempo. Por el camino se les hizo de noche y que, para no perderse en la zona pantanosa, los caminantes decidieron poner un farolillo en el extremo de una caña que les alumbrara el camino.
Cada Gaiata está relacionada a un barrio, y los vecinos del mismo colaboran (sea con su dinero o con su acción) en las fiestas por medio de las organizaciones que representan a ese barrio frente a los demás... Estas organizaciones también se llaman Gaiatas.
Para mi el momento de máximo esplendor de las Gaiatas es cuando todas se reúnen en un lugar y se encienden para el deleite del público. Luego estas se trasladan a lugares en los barrios a los que representan, y se dejan encendidas para que todo el mundo pueda verlas.
Intenté acercarme a las Gaiatas cuando estas se encendieron, pero había tanta gente que me resultó imposible, por lo que me esperé a que la gente se fuese y entonces pude hacer las fotografías...

In today's post I'm going to talk about the Gaiatas. In the last post i talked about the canes or "gaiatos" united by ropes that were used by Castellón colonists. The Gaiatas have a deep relationship with those, as we will see.
A popular saying tells us a Gaiata must be "un esclat de llum sense foc ni fum" (an explosion of light without smoke nor fire). The Gaiata is one of the symbols that represent tradition. It tells us that the day the colonists decided to came to the plane it was a dark and rainy day. It became night and to avoid getting lost in the swampy zone they decided to put lights in the canes (called gaiatos) to see the way.
Each Gaiata is related to a neighborhood, and the neighbors help (economically or with their labor) in the holidays throughout the organizations that represent their neighborhood in front of the others... That organizations are also called "Gaiatas".
To mi the most splendorous moment of the Gaiatas is the "Encesa" (Lightning) when all are reunited in one place and illuminated at the same time. Later they are moved to placer in the neighborhoods they represent, and are left "on" for everybody to see.
I tried to get close to the Gaiatas when they were turned on, but there was a lot of people and it was impossible, so i waited until the people was gone and then i was able to make the photographs.

Creo que esta ha sido elegida cómo la mejor Gaiata de estas Magdalenas, pero no estoy seguro. Si alguien lo sabe a ciencia cierta que me lo comunique... Gracias.

La Romería a la Magdalena / The Pilgrimage to the Magdalena

Saludos a todo/as:

Primero que nada pedir perdón por no haber actualizado antes la página, pero es que he estado tomando fotos, y teniendo en cuenta que tardo mucho tiempo en subir las fotografías a esta página no he podido actualizarlo antes...
Pero vamos a lo que nos atañe. En esta actualización no hay fotos "históricas", sino más bien todo lo contrarío. Son fotos de mis amigos de fiesta, y algunas fotos de la "Romería a la Magdalena", en las que si hay un poco de lección de historia.
Como ya indiqué en el primer post quiero mostrar la diferencia entre las fiestas "oficiales" y las que la gente joven vive, y este post empieza a mostrar esa diferencia...

First of all i have to ask your forgiveness because I haven't actualized the page before, but i have been taking photos. And taking into account the time i spend loading the photographies to this webpage i have been unable to actualize it before...
But lets go to the matter at hand. In this actualization there are no "historical" photographs, just the opposite. They are photos of my friends partying and some Photos of the Pilgrimage to the Magdalena, where you can find a little bit of history.
As i have said in my first post i want to show the difference between the "official" holidays and the ones the young people lives. And this post begins to show that difference...

Los que nos conozcan sabran que significa... / Those that know us will know what this means...

Estas fotos son el mismo día, unas tres o cuatro horas después en la colla.
Those photos are from the same day, several hours later at the "colla".
Y aquí empieza la Romería a la Magdalena.
La zona que ocupa ahora la ciudad en 1251 era una zona pantanosa, y los Cristianos , que vivían en un Castillo en plena montaña, al bajar a ocupar esa zona llevaban unos bastones llamados "gaiatos" con los que comprobaban la consistencia del suelo al avanzar (para no hundirse). Estos gaiatos iban atados con cuerdas para que los colonos no se perdiesen , y para poder rescatar a aquellos que se hundiesen...
Como veréis en las imágenes la gente lleva unas cañas con cintas verdes. Estas simbolizan los gaiatos y las cuerdas que los unían, y con ellas en la mano los habitantes de Castellón recorren los cuatro kilómetros que hay desde Castellón hasta la Hermita de la Magdalena (justo al Castillo del que partieron los Cristianos) en la llamada Romería a la Magdalena para rememorar a esos primeros colonos.
Por cierto, las fotos son de las 6:00 de la madrugada.

And here begins the Pilgrimage to the Magdalena.
The zone now occupied by the city in 1251 was a swamp zone. And the Christians, that lived in a Castle in the mountain, when colonizing the swamp zone had a kind of staffs called "gaiatos" (with a knob in the end). The gaiatos wee used to probe the ground to test it's solidity and avoid falling into the swamp. The gaiatos were tied with ropes, to avoid the colonists from getting lost and rescue those that fall into the swamp...
As you can see the people in the photos wear canes with green ribbons. Those symbolize the gaiatos and the ropes that bind them. And with those on their hands the inhabitants of Castellón travel four kilometers, from Castellón to the Church of the Magdalena (near the castle the first colonists came from) in the so called "Romería a la Magdalena" to remember those first colonists.
Ah, the photos have been made at 6:00 in the morning, with the first light of the day.

Mis amigos y yo llevamos toda la noche de fiesta, y, cómo mucha otra gente joven, no vamos a hacer la Romería. Pero si mantenemos la tradición de ir a recoger las cañas y desayunar unas "barrtetchas" una fuerte bebida típica de la zona.
My friends and I have been all night partying. And, as many other young people, we don't do the Pilgrimage. But we maintain the old tradition of collecting the canes with green ribbons and we breakfast some "barretchas" a strong alcoholic drink typical of the zone.
Y al levantarnos nos volvimos a reunir. Imagina para qué.

And when we woke up we reunited again. Imagine what for.

El Pregón / The Touting

El mismo sábado por la tarde es el "pregón", que es realmente un desfile, más que un pregón a la antigua usanza. En el se representan los mitos y la historia fundacional de Castellón. En la primitiva ciudad musulmanes, cristianos y judíos vivían en una relativa armonía, y estos tres colectivos se representan en el pregón...
Las fotografías se presentan en el mismo orden en que salen en el pregón.

The very same Saturday it's the "touting", although it is more a parade than a touting it has a town crier that touts the beginning of the holidays. On the touting the myths and founding history of the city is represented. In the primitive city Muslims, Christians and Jews lived together in relative peace and harmony, and this three collectives are represented in the parade...
The photographs are presented in the very same order they come out in the touting.

Magdalena Festa Plena / Magdalena Full Party

Las fiestas de la Magdalena empiezan de manera oficial con una "mascletà" que básicamente se podría definir cómo un castillo de fuegos artificiales, pero de día y en el que el ruido y el ritmo de las explosiones es más importante que el color y la luz...

Las primeras fotos correspondientes al sábado 10 son las de la mascletà. Es posible que estas fotos no tengan un gran sentido para aquellos que no hayan visto una mascletà, por esto he incluido varias fotografías de la "Reina de las Fiestas" y de algunas de sus damas, que pasaron por la mascletá para declarar el inicio de las fiestas.

The Magdalena holidays begin officially with a "mascletà". It could be defined as fireworks without the fire. It done on daytime instead of night and the sound of the explosions and the rhythm is more important than light and color... The first photographs are from a "mascletá".
It's possible that the photos have no sense to those that haven't seen a "mascletà". That's why i have included some photographs of the "Queen of the Holidays" and some of her dames. They went to the "mascletà" to declare the beginning of the holidays.

Un poco más tarde ese mismo día la "Germandat dels Cavallers de la Conquesta" acompañados por "Na Violant D'Hungría" (segunda mujer de el rey Jaume I el Conquistador, enterrada en el Real Monasterio de Santa Maria de Vallbona) y de la Reina de las Fiestas Homenajean al Rey Jaume I, y le agradecen el permiso que concedió para fundar la ciudad de Castellón de la Plana en 1251. En el homenaje encontramos también a un grupo de Caballeros del Temple, así cómo a las autoridades de la ciudad.
Si la mascletà es el inicio más "fiestero" de la Magdalena el Homenaje al Rey Jaume i el Conqueridor marca el inicio "oficial" (o cómo mínimo más histórico) de las Fiestas.

Later on that very day the "Germandat dels Cavallers de la Conquesta" (Brotherhood of the Conquest Knights) accompanied by "Na Violant D'Hungría" (second wife of Jaime I the Conquerer, buried on the Santa Maria Royal Monastery of Vallbona) and the Queen of the Holidays will pay homage to King Jaume the First and thank him for the permission to build the city of Castellon of the Plains in 1251. At the homage we also find a group of Templars and of course the city authorities. If the "mascletà" is the "party" side of the beginning of the Magdalenas the Homage to King Jaume the Conqueror is the official beginning (at least historic) of the Holidays.

Y así empiezan las fiestas de Castellón... Hay más actos, pero no tengo el don de la ubicuidad.

Se acerca la Magdalena / The Magdalena is closing on us

Dentro de una hora empieza la Magdalena, pero antes de que empiecen quiero explicar que son las "collas". En todas las fiestas españolas encontramos la misma idea, aunque en cada ciudad se les llame de una forma distinta. Básicamente las collas son un grupo de personas que se reúnen, alquilan un local (un garaje o similar), compran alcohol y cacahuetes en común, e invitan a todos sus amigos a que pasen a visitarlo (y al mismo tiempo ellos visitan las collas de sus amigos). Con esto se forman todas unas redes de locales que visitar, en los que la gente bebe gratis (o por cantidades irrisorias) e intenta pasarelo lo mejor posible...

One hour from now the Magdalena holidays will begin, but before they do i would like to explain what are the "collas". All the Spanish holidays have the same idea, althought each city gives them a different name. Basically the "collas" are a group of friends that unite themselves, rent a locale (usually a garage or something similar), and by alcohol and peanuts together. While they invite all their friends to pay them a visit, they are invited in turn to pay their friend a visit to their own "collas". This creates a web of places to visit where you can drink for free (or at least very cheap) and tries to have a good time...

Así empieza / So it begins... (english version below)

Pasado mañana empiezan en la ciudad de Castellón las Fiestas de la Magdalena.
Estas fiestas, para aquellos que no lo sepan, conmemoran los orígenes de la ciudad, recordando el traslado de la ciudad desde la colina de la Magdalena hasta el plano fértil litoral en 1251 y la reconquista de las tierras, en posesión de los musulmanes.
Mi intención con este blog es proporcionar imágenes de las Fiestas de la Magdalena con varios objetivos:
Primero, que aquellos castellonenses que se encuentran en otras ciudades (cómo me ha ocurrido a mi en varias ocasiones) puedan por lo menos disfrutar un poco viendo imágenes de las fiestas.
Por otro lado pretendo que este blog sirva para promocionar las Fiestas entre aquellas personas que no conocen las fiestas (ese es el motivo por el que el blog está escrito en castellano e inglés, dos de los idiomas más hablados del mundo). Estas tienen una gran riqueza histórica, y la pasión que los valencianos sentimos por los fuegos artificiales las convierte en unas fiestas muy bellas.
Y mi tercera intención, y para mi la más importante, es mostrar la diferencia que existe entre las fiestas "oficiales" y la fiesta nocturna que la gente joven (y no tan joven) disfrutamos. No es que pretenda criticar esto, sino solo mostrarlo, cada uno ya tomará las conclusiones que quiera, y por supuesto podrá opinar en este blog.

Two days from now in the Spanish city of Castellon the "Fiestas of the Magdalena" (Magdalena Holidays) will beguin.
For those that doesn't know they commemorate the foundation of the city in 1251, remembering the conquest of the lands (in hands of the Muslims) and the transfer from the mountain (where the Christians were living in well protected castles) to the plain seacoast.
During the commemoration several parades are hold, with the people dresses as Christians or Muslims, mounting on horses, doing military marches, etc. They are very beautiful, and interesting form an historical viewpoint.
On the other side the people from those lands are very fond of fireworks, and all the children are taught how to use fireworks when they are very young.

My intention with this blog is to provide images of the "Fiestas of the Magdalena" with various objectives:
First, to give those inhabitants of Castellón that live in other cities (like has happened to me several times) at least the opportunity to see al least some images of their city at party.
I also pretend that the blog promotes the "Fiestas of the Magdalena" among those that don't know them (thats why the blog is both in Spanish and English). The commemorations have great historical richness, and the passion the Valencian people has for fireworks helps create a very beautiful holidays.
And my third intention, and for me the most important, is to show the abyssal diference that exists among the "official" holidays and the night party that young (and not so young) people have. I do not pretend to criticize it, but only to show it, and give a space to talk about it, whatever it is that they want to say.
